Wakefield Hockey Club was this month’s venue and the games almost didn't go ahead after a puddle formed in the middle of the pitch in the morning after a heavy night’s rain! However the sun soon came out and we were ready for the off!
When the squad had made it and finally finished pestering their parents to buy them Christmas presents from C.G sports it was down to the business of the day - winning hockey! Bribed with chocolate we watched an extremely strong West Yorkshire squad hammer Humberside 8-0. The look of terror was their on the girls faces as they wondered what this squad would make of them! Fortunately we had the slightly less terrifying task of Merseyside first and off we went determined to find that goal scoring form we had struggled with last time. With some fine words from Captain Peanuts - which shocked us all - we were off! And within two minutes were 1-0 up thanks to an outstanding strike from Jenny. Merseyside did only have 10 players but still put up a fight and it took a lot of hard work for the next goal to come but when it did it was amazing! Izzy calmly ran into the D and slotted home a beautiful aerial strike! Which she quickly followed with another just before half time.
Half time 3-0
A slight lapse in concentration lead to Merseyside scoring a goal in the first few but it was the kick the girls needed to get themselves going again. Alex showed off her silky dribbling skills and placed a well aimed shot past the keeper to make it 4-1. By this time however the weather was beginning to go against us and the pitch had become more of a puddle again! This didn't stop South working the ball round for Nicole to claim her first county goals with two lovely shots. Despite the scoreline Merseyside did put up a fight and it was only down to some outstanding defending from Charlotte G that kept them away from Thea at the back.
Final score 6-1 win
Man of the match - Charlotte G! Lovely defending and some amazing hits from the back to reach those goal hungry forwards.
We were meant to play West Yorkshire afterwards but sadly the pitch was unplayable with the amount of surface water and the tournament had to be abandoned. So the girls made themselves at home in a changing room to dry off and quickly ate their way through a whole tin of celebrations!
