In July 2006, England Hockey announced a "single system for hockey project".
"The Single System for Hockey proposals set out a long term vision for a consistent, open and transparent system for hockey in England. Some readers may be familiar with the term Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD). This is a concept based on evidenced research about how young people develop sporting ability. This research has, for many years, been used to underpin physical education teaching. The Single System for Hockey proposals are the result of a two year project considering whether and/or how adopting the principles of LTAD may be of benefit to hockey in England." |

England Hockey has brought in the "Single System" for hockey for the whole country.
Field Hockey for young people in England begins at School and/or Club and the system is being introduced to provide a clear and concise pathway from grass roots to representative hockey at the highest level.
Hockey Clubs and hockey playing Schools underpin the whole system and provide both an introduction to the sport, player development and competitions.
The system will provide assessment and development for those players showing ability and desire to improve and participate at a higher level commensurate with their ability and commitment.
The initial stage of the system is the Junior Development Centres, which are locally based assessment centres approved by England Hockey. In South Yorkshire these are based at the Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield Club sites. Assessment and development is offered at the three venues to young people both boys and girls in the age groups Under 12, 13,14,15,16 and 17 based on January 1st date of birth. The programme runs from September to December finishing with a South Yorkshire JDC tournament. At each age group for both boys and girls we are targeting approx 90 players to be involved, 30 per centre.
The JDC at Doncaster will take place on selected Friday evenings from the 5th September from 6pm to 8pm.
The JDC at Sheffield will also take place on Friday evenings from 6pm to 9pm at selected times.
The JDC at Rotherham will take place on selected Sunday afternoons starting from 14th September.
These three centres are open to any young hockey player in South Yorkshire but they can only attend one centre and we recommend that they attend the centre within easiest travel distance from their home.
Details of the three local JDC programmes will be circulated to clubs and schools in South Yorkshire local to each centre. Clubs and schools in the Barnsley area will be sent details of all three centres. The JDC Organisers for each centre can be contacted by e-mail or by phone as detailed below:
The next stage is the Junior Academy Centre, which is almost the same as past year's South Yorkshire Boys and Girls programmes. In December after the JDC tournaments players will be selected to attend the South Yorkshire JAC at the following age groups for both boys and girls. Under 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17. We expect that up to 30 players will be selected initially for each age group but this will be reduced on a selection basis during the programme, which will run from January to May. In May or June a JAC tournament will be organised in the Yorkshire Region.
Those players with exceptional ability and potential will be invited to attend the Junior Regional Performance Centre in Leeds. The coaching and competitions for this Centre will take place after the JAC work in June, July, September and October. Players involved in the selected squads for this will not be expected to be involved in the following season's JDC process but will be expected to be involved in the JAC programme for the next season.
The South Yorkshire Hockey Development Group will manage the JDC & JAC programmes on England Hockey's behalf. Limited funding for this work will be provided by EH but only for 2 years after which the system has to be self-financing. Player contribution is essential to sustain the programmes for future years.
All coaches are appointed by SYHDG in conjunction with EH. They will be qualified, insured and hold an enhanced CRB clearance certificate. The coaching syllabus will include England Hockey Core Skills.
