England HockeyIn July 2006, England Hockey announced a "single system for hockey project".

"The Single System for Hockey proposals set out a long term vision for a consistent, open and transparent system for hockey in England. Some readers may be familiar with the term Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD). This is a concept based on evidenced research about how young people develop sporting ability. This research has, for many years, been used to underpin physical education teaching. The Single System for Hockey proposals are the result of a two year project considering whether and/or how adopting the principles of LTAD may be of benefit to hockey in England."

England Hockey's Single System is the new development pathway for all ages, genders and abilities; players, coaches and officials to their full potential.

Prior to the LTAD the pathway varies enormously, not only between boys and girls but from region to region and county to county. The purpose of the Single System is to make opportunities for participants fair, equitable and consistent. It is to ensure that a suitable level of coaching and competition is offered for people at the appropriate stage of their development.

This new system proposes to provide a 'single pathway' through the hockey development process for all involved.

Yorkshire will introduce four Junior Academy Centres, with the long-term aim of introducing 11 Junior Development Centres which will feed into the Academies. The Hockey Development Groups, along with the support of existing Junior Hockey Associations, will take responsibility for these Centres.
